Originally, of course, all furniture was handmade. There were no extensive assembly lines to design and create pieces of furniture that was exactly the same as the next, and although modern fashions and furniture have evolved, the interest that surrounds handmade or "bespoke" furniture has steadily increased.  

Bespoke is a term that is used for hand crafted or handmade items that are often made to measure certain dimensions. The terminology is not restricted to furniture, however. It is also a well know design of clothing and even cars. Bespoke items are those that have been custom designed and created to meet a customer's exact specifications and requirements and are also guaranteed to be one off pieces. Although they can be similar to other items there will be one part of them that is different from the rest, and this is why the appeal of bespoke furniture has rapidly grown.  

Antiques can now play a large part in furnishing homes in today's society, and these handcrafted bespoke furniture pieces are often perfect for centrepiece that is unique in nature and follows the themes of many antique items of beech or oak furniture. However, that is not to say that bespoke furniture pieces don't have their place in even the most updated of homes. That is the essence bespoke furniture, that it can be used to fit into any style of home and also any size of room, nook or cranny.  

Being hand designed and hand crafted, bespoke furniture can be used to insert furniture in strange shaped alcoves in the room enabling the homeowner to maximise the use of limited space. Assembly line produced items of furniture tend to lack the character of bespoke furniture, and also are usually not made to such a high quality. With bespoke furniture, each piece of furniture is created by hand so that the customer can be assured that only the best quality standard is maintained. However, bespoke furniture is certainly not a new idea. This particular style of furniture goes back many, many centuries to the days when family members used to create furniture for the home when it was too expensive to buy. It can be somewhat backdated to the ages of ancient civilisations when the males of the household created very simple and useful items to be used around the home, such as an old tree stump that had been whittled down to represent a chair.  

These days, bespoke furniture is of course much more complex in nature, with beautifully hand crafted designs that can be sophisticated and elegant or fussy and complicated, making it a perfect solution for those that are considering re-furnishing their homes to a chosen style.

Bespoke furniture can generally prove more costly than commercially made furniture. This is due to the amount of thought and care that goes into every piece that is handmade.  It should be considered as a worthwhile investment though, as it can make for a great statement piece in any home.
