The Principles of Luxury Bedroom Interior Design
The master bedroom is so often the starting point for people undertaking the interior design of their home. While interior design is always a matter of personal taste, there are certain design principles that are non-negotiable when it comes to any luxury bedroom. As a member of the British Institute of Interior Design, Juliettes Interiors specialise in interior design and luxury furniture for high-end residential interiors and property developments. Founder Juliette Thomas gives her top 5 bedroom interior design principles.
Create a Sanctuary
The first, and most important, is that your bedroom should be a sanctuary. It needs to be calm, soothing and free of clutter, unlike any other room in your home. No television, no phones, no gadgets – not at bedtime anyway. Just a serene space where you can escape the stresses of daily life, unwind and drift off to sleep. Choose a warm neutral base colour for a restful, cosy feel. That’s not to say you shouldn’t include rich, deeper colours but avoid anything too fussy or busy.
The Best Bed
Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom and is where most people start the design process. It is also at the heart of a great night’s sleep. This is why you should always choose the very best, most comfortable and luxurious bed and mattress you possibly can. Juliettes Interiors specialises in high end, luxury bedrooms with exclusive, designer furniture that can’t be found anywhere else. From classic to contemporary styles, every bed can be fully customised, allowing customers to choose colours, fabrics, finishes, size and mattress to create their ultimate, perfect bed. Layer your bed with high quality, luxurious linens, king size pillows and a fabulous throw for a crisp, fresh feel and a high end look.
The Bedroom Essentials
Before you get bogged down in the smaller details, concentrate first on the essential pieces. No well-designed bedroom is complete without bedside tables, dressing table, wardrobe and a beautiful mirror. The need for bedside tables is obvious. Everyone needs somewhere to put glasses, phone, book and a bedside lamp. A dressing table is a place to get ready but don’t limit your choice to just dressing tables. A chic console table or a handsome desk could easily double up as a dressing table and work space if necessary. A wardrobe with both hanging space and shelves or drawers is the minimum you need to take care of clothes and accessories. Lastly, a high end bedroom must have at least a full length dressing mirror. Only when you have these in place should you start looking at benches, chests of drawers, armchairs, even sofas and side tables if you have the space.
Lighting should never be an afterthought. It is an integral part of any well-planned bedroom design. Plan for layers of light for different purposes and moods. You will need a minimum of a ceiling light, bedside lamps and floor lamps. Every bedside table and dressing table should have a table lamp. If you have a dressing area, it requires a good, bright light. Ceiling lights should be bright enough to light up a central area without being too stark. Then use floor lamps to illuminate the areas in between. Your aim should be to create warmth and ambience but with spots of brighter, task lighting.
Go with What You Love
The final thing you should always bear in mind when tackling any interior design project is to go with things you absolutely love. Don’t choose things because they are on-trend or you have seen them in a magazine. The whole interior design of your bedroom needs to speak to you and make you feel at home.Established in 2005 by Juliette Thomas, Juliettes Interiors is an internationally renowned award winning company, offering an interior design service, interior design courses and a retail showroom in Chelsea.
