Designer Chairs

Designer Chairs

Designer chairs come in all sorts of shapes and designs.  Ranging from the simple to the grandest and everything in between. The word designer conjures up in ones mind the idea of expensive.  But the term designer these days does not mean expensive at all.  A designer may put their name to a high street brand and therefore those items will be produced for the mass markets in volume to satisfy the slightly more stylish conscious consumer who wishes to play safe with a well known branded designer with the thought that their choice in design may be right.  On the other hand, and at the other end of the scale, is the not so cost conscious or budget aware consumer who literally wants something totally unique and bespoke and far more exclusive.  These consumers want what they want and they want it their way.  So effectively this type of person has designed their own chair too.

Hotels are a good example where to see designer chairs.  They require chairs to not only be sturdy and cope with a commercial environment but to fit a certain places also.

Designer Chairs

A superb example of a designer chair would be a porter’s chair or sofa, found at the entrance of a grand home or hotel – an iconic, statement piece made to be noticed . For this situation a designer will have the option to lavish the chair with upholstery, produce maybe an oversized version like a throne.

Further examples can be found in exclusive restaurants where, again, the owners wish to make a statement. By using designer chairs, this can be achieved easily.  Often commercial establishments like to be noticed for their choice of designer chairs, such as a classic Charles Eames chair, an iconic piece we all recognise. And we all know the “egg chair” designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the Radisson Hotel in Copenhagen. And not forgetting the Philippe Starck chair ghost.

Another good example of designer chairs is that of Le Corbusier (Charles-Edouard Jeanneret) who started designing around the late 1920s with chrome tubular furniture.  These designs still appear very modern but their roots stretch back almost 100 years. We all know the LC4 chaise and Grand Confort chair that Le Corbusier is well known for.

These designers are artists, shaping design history through the ages with their amazing designs to be remembered forever.
