Designer Beds for Luxury Bedrooms

Designer beds should offer more than a place to sleep. They should also give the bedroom structure, comfort and visual balance.

For example, a high headboard can add height to the room. A wide upholstered bed can create a softer and more hotel-inspired look. As a result, the right design can improve both the appearance and comfort of the space.

Upholstered, Italian, Art Deco and Classic Beds

Our collection includes upholstered designs, Italian beds, Art Deco styles, classic carved frames and contemporary bedroom pieces. It also includes storage beds, winged beds, buttoned headboards and four-poster designs.

Therefore, clients can choose a bed that suits the property style. A contemporary design may suit a penthouse or modern apartment. By contrast, a carved or buttoned design may suit a more formal bedroom.

Choosing the Right Bed Size and Headboard Height

The right bed depends on the room size, ceiling height and furniture layout. It also depends on the mattress size and the amount of space needed around the bed.

For example, a tall headboard can suit a large principal bedroom. A lower design may work better in a smaller room. In addition, clients should allow space for bedside tables, wardrobes, doors, sockets and lighting.

Bespoke Upholstery, Fabrics and Finishes

Many beds can be customised by size, fabric, leather, colour, finish or decorative detail. For instance, clients may choose velvet, plain fabric, patterned upholstery, leather, contrast piping, button detailing or specialist wood finishes.

This flexibility matters in luxury interiors. Standard beds do not always suit the scale, colour palette or layout of a room. Therefore, bespoke options can help create a more balanced final result.

Beds for Complete Bedroom Schemes

A bed should work with the full bedroom scheme. For example, the upholstery can coordinate with curtains, cushions, rugs, wall coverings and bedside furniture.

The frame finish can also connect with mirrors, lighting, wardrobes and dressing tables. In this way, the bed feels part of the room rather than added afterwards.

What styles of luxury beds are available?

Juliettes Interiors offers upholstered beds, Italian beds, Art Deco beds, classic beds, buttoned beds, storage beds, winged beds and four-poster beds. These styles suit principal bedrooms, guest rooms, apartments, penthouses and complete bedroom schemes.

Can Juliettes Interiors customise beds?

Yes. Juliettes Interiors can customise many beds by size, fabric, leather, colour, finish or detailing. As a result, clients can choose a design that suits their room and wider interior scheme.

What should I check before ordering a designer bed?

Check the full bed dimensions, not only the mattress size. Also check the headboard height, footboard depth, room access, socket positions, door swings and space for bedside tables.

Do I need a matching headboard and bedside tables?

Not always. A matching set can create a coordinated look. However, contrast can also work well if the materials, colours and proportions feel balanced.

How do I choose the right designer bed?

Start with the room size, mattress size and headboard height. Then consider upholstery, colour, frame finish and nearby furniture. Juliettes Interiors can advise on suitable beds for your home or interior design project.

FAQs

What is the best combination of bed base and mattress?

For the ultimate in luxury and comfort, we would probably recommend a sprung edge divan base and the best quality mattress you can afford. However, there is no right or wrong answer to this. All our luxury beds are exquisitely crafted to the highest possible standard. Every one of them is built with your comfort in mind.

With that in mind, choose something that you love, something that will make a statement in your bedroom, and top it with the finest mattress you can. Buy the biggest bed you can fit into your bedroom, and make sure that you order the right size mattress for the bed.

Are all beds the same length?

No. Single and standard double beds are 190 cm (6’ 3”) long, whereas any larger standard sizes are 200 cm (6’ 6”) long. Remember that all luxury beds and mattresses at Juliettes Interiors can be made to order in whatever length and width you require.

Will my new bed fit?

1. Always check the overall dimension of the bed before you order, and not just by the size of the mattress. Different styles of beds can have varying measurements.
Allow for the size of the headboard, footboard, skirting boards, opening doors (such as wardrobes) and any shaping or curves.

2. Check the headboard height, as many can have tall height measurements.

3. Check the position of the sockets in the room for bedside tables and lights.

4. Use an online planner and enter the dimensions of the bed and the overall room. Mark out the bed with masking tape on the floor.
Check access to the room to ensure you can get the bed in there.

Which type of bed do chiropractors recommend?

The British Chiropractic Association say that their practitioners are often asked for advice, and their answer is always that there is not one type of bed that is suitable for everyone.

The best mattress is a supportive one and it will vary from person to person. You need to try mattresses out to find which is right for you. When you lie on your side, your spine should be horizontal and parallel to the mattress. If your spine bends downwards, the bed is too soft. If you seem to be perched on shoulder and hip, it is too hard.

When sharing a bed, what may work for one person doesn’t for the other. If there is a significant difference in weight between the two of you, or you each need something very different, look for a bed that will allow two separate single mattresses to be zipped together. Alternatively, choose a manufacturer who can create a bespoke mattress with different tensions to cater for both partners. Every mattress supplied by Juliettes Interiors can be customised to create a bespoke bed, perfect for both of you.

Is a hard bed good for a bad back?

It is not. This is a myth based on very old advice. In the past, mattresses were filled with materials that tended to pack down and sag, often causing back pain. The only way to make them more supportive was to put something flat, such as a board, underneath. Hence, the myth was born.

Modern materials and construction methods mean that we no longer need to put boards underneath our mattresses. A mattress should be firm enough to support the contours of your body in your preferred sleeping position, but soft enough to be comfortable. The best way to find out what’s right for you is to test as many as you can, for as long as you can.

What is the best bed for allergy and asthma sufferers?

The most common bed-related allergen is house dust mites. Some manufacturers are now using treated fabrics to deter dust mites, and you can buy anti-dust mite mattress covers. Check manufacturers’ product information to find out whether they offer anti-dust-mite ticking. However, almost all beds will, in time, attract dust mites. Regular cleaning and airing will help to reduce the effect. Always check details of construction and materials if you suffer from any other allergies.

How are beds made?

A bed is usually made up of two parts; the base and the mattress.

1. The base can be anything from a simple frame with a woven layer attached to support a mattress, to a grand, carved wooden centerpiece, to a luxurious sprung edge divan. At Juliettes Interiors, all our bases are manufactured by master craftsmen using only the finest, natural materials, fabrics, and finishes. Each product description will give you details of the materials used and customisation options for those looking for a bespoke luxury bed.

2. A conventional modern mattress consists of three sections; an innerspring core for support, a cushioning or comfort section made up of layers of soft yet resilient materials, and an outer upholstered cover, known as ticking.

3. There is increasing interest in modern, hi-tech foam mattresses, which use various combinations of foams such as latex and viscoelastic or memory foam. Check the manufacturer’s information for full information.

What is the difference between a single bed and a twin bed?

There is no difference. The term ‘twin’ simply means that it is supposed to be one of a matching pair of single beds.

What is the difference between a bed and a mattress?

It can be confusing as the word ‘bed’ can mean just the base (bedstead, frame or divan) or it can mean the whole ensemble of base and mattress. Make sure you know whether the mattress is included before you order. Our website has collections called ‘Luxury Divans & Bases’ and ‘Luxury Beds’. These include the base only and you will need to choose a luxury mattress as well. We do not sell them as a package, as the right mattress is a very personal choice. A mattress is precisely that. Just the mattress. It does not refer to the base at all.

Which beds do luxury hotels use?

The simple answer is ‘high quality, comfortable ones’. They choose reputable brands and they don’t cheap out on the amount they are prepared to pay. Whether it’s 5* or budget, every hotel’s main objective is to provide their guests with a welcoming place to sleep. If guests don’t get a good night’s sleep because the bed is not up to standard, they will not return – and hotels rely on repeat visits and recommendations. Any hotel that has invested in luxury beds for their guests should be happy to tell you which brand they use. Just ask.

Why are beds so expensive?

A luxury bed will have individual pocket springs and layers of the finest fillings for comfort and resilience. Our mattresses include such materials as cashmere, mohair, wool, bamboo, cotton, silk and even silver. They are hand finished with exceptional attention to detail, ensuring the highest quality product. Our bases are hand-crafted to the same exceptional standard. Bear in mind that your bed will last you around 8 – 10 years, so the cost per night is actually quite modest. Always buy the best quality bed you can afford because you cannot put a value on a good night’s sleep for wellness reasons.

How do I stop my bed squeaking?

Never make the mistake of thinking that a few squeaks mean you need a new bed. It is a complex piece of furniture with many joints. The longer you use it, the more likely it is that some of these joints will loosen.

1. Tighten joints -Your first task is to go around and tighten the joints with a screwdriver or spanner – start with the headboard and footboard. Try adding plastic or rubber washers if your bed doesn’t already have them.

2. Check other fixings– If you have hooks attaching the side rails to the headboard, make sure that they are pushed down firmly. If you have wooden slats, check to make sure they are all firmly pushed into their end fixings. Also, check that none are damaged, and replace any that are.

3. Lubricate – If you still have a squeak, try to pinpoint the source of the noise and lubricate any joints, hooks or fixings in that area. If it is a metal-to-metal joint, you can spray with WD40 but NEVER use oil, WD40 or any chemical lubricant on any wooden parts of your bed. It will soak into the wood and will smell and attract dirt and dust. We would recommend using a small bar of natural beeswax but you can also use a candle or even a bar of soap.

How to care for your luxury bed

1. Protect your mattress – Use a good quality, natural fibre mattress protector – or one specifically designed to be anti-dust-mite if allergies are a problem. This will protect your mattress from spills and stains and maintain hygiene. Avoid plastic or any non-breathable materials. These can trap moisture underneath, leading to mould growth. They also prevent moisture wicking away from your body and can lead to an uncomfortable night’s sleep.

2. Rotate and turn – During the first three months, we recommend that you rotate your mattress every week (so that the head end is now at the foot). After that, you should rotate and turn, or flip, your mattress every three months. You may need two people to do this – a luxury mattress can be very heavy. If you have a pillow-top or no-turn mattress, it will not need to be turned over but you should still rotate it from head to foot to ensure even wear. Zip and link mattresses must be unzipped before turning or rotating. Treat each mattress as a separate item.

3. Expect indentations – Your mattress is designed to support and mould around your body contours. Rotating and turning it will minimise body impressions but, over time, all those lovely layers of luxurious fillings will conform to your body shape and sleeping position. This is the mattress doing its job, not a fault.

4. Do not fold – Never try to fold or roll an innerspring mattress. Always keep it flat, as folding or rolling can damage the interior construction. When not in use, it should still be stored flat, not on its end. Modern foam mattresses can be rolled but should not be stored for long periods of time in this way.
Airing – Ventilation is important. Leave your bed linen pulled back for a couple of hours every day if you can. Once a week, remove all your bed linen and leave for several hours to allow air to circulate around and through the mattress.

5. Cleaning – You should dust all surfaces of your bed regularly to prevent the build-up of dirt and dust. Once a month, clean base and mattress with a soft brush to clear away any accumulated dust and fluff. Many manufacturers say not to use a vacuum cleaner on your mattress or any upholstery as it can damage fabrics and dislodge fillings. However, if you use the upholstery brush attachment, it is less harsh and will get rid of a lot of dead skin and dust mites. Tackle spills immediately, mopping them up with a towel or paper towels. Do not use bleach or harsh detergents.

6. Avoid Unnecessary Damage – Allowing children to bounce regularly on your bed can cause uneven wear and tear and will reduce the level of support and the lifespan of both mattress and base. You should also avoid sitting regularly on the edge of your bed as it can damage the perimeter of your mattress.

7 Care for your bed base – This will depend very much on the type of base you have, its construction and the materials and fabrics used. Dust any flat surfaces and brush fabrics gently to avoid the build-up of dirt and fluff. Vacuum gently with an upholstery or dusting brush attachment.

Can you take away my old bed and mattress?

If you order a new luxury mattress from Juliettes Interiors, we can arrange for your old mattress and base to be taken away. It will go to Hypnos (even if it is not one of their beds) to be recycled.
