Start with a Statement
Where should you start? If you are renovating your whole living room, we would always recommend choosing one, maybe two, outstanding, statement pieces. This could be a luxury sofa, a designer sideboard or a central coffee table. Even something as simple as a table lamp could be your starting point. You will know it when you see it. It will be something you absolutely love, something that makes your heart jump – and nothing else will fall into place without it.
If you are happy with your existing décor and only want to replace your sofa or add some new luxury armchairs, in some ways it will be more difficult as you have to choose something that will work with what you already have. Do you already have a statement piece in the room? If so, your new sofa needs to complement, not compete. If not, you have more scope to be bold with your choice of new luxury furniture. Again, choose something that really inspires you. And while this article is all about impressing your guests, remember this is something you have to live with afterwards.
Don’t be Scared of Colour
Once you have your statement pieces in mind, the rest of the room should follow from there. Decide on your colour scheme based on your bold statement pieces. Don’t just go for shades of the same colour. There will always be a palette of complementary colours, any of which could completely change the look and feel of your room. Look online for inspiration – paint manufacturers will have pages of suggestions and mood boards to spark your imagination. Use these colours not just on your walls but for upholstery fabrics, lacquered finishes and soft furnishings. Do not be scared of colour but embrace it. Even if you decide on a predominantly monochrome scheme, the trend is to have one or two items of furniture in a striking, contrasting shade. For instance, we are seeing a lot of mustard used as a splash of colour against a deep blue décor.
