Period Design: Inspirational Interiors from The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age

The new seasons of The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age both land this month, and we’re feeling inspired by the spectacular interiors featured in these period dramas. So, today we’re bringing you luxurious, opulent, eye-catching furniture with period design at its core.

The Buccaneers centres around a group of American women sent to 1870s London. We’re talking regency-era, Bridgerton-style sets, style and decor, but with an Anglo-American culture clash.

The Gilded Age, whilst set during the same time period, focuses on late 19th Century New York – or ‘the Gilded Age’ – a time of industrialisation and wealth disparity. Featuring real mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, it’s tough not to be distracted by the elaborate and grand interiors featured in this show.

Simplicity and subtlety is not an option when it comes to these interiors. To fit in, you need opulence, grandeur and maximalism!

If a full ‘regencycore’ makeover feels a bit too far for you, however, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to introduce a period heart into your high-end home.

A royal colour-palette

Less can be more when it comes to your paint palette, as you really want your lighting, art and furniture to do the talking.

Generally, a neutral base – like ivory or stone – works well. Alternatively, go all-in by colour drenching the walls, floors and ceiling of a space in pastels, like blush pink or powder blue.

Lavishness should be sprinkled throughout with deep jewel tones – think ruby, emerald, sapphire and amethyst – though, ideally stick to one rich colour per space.

Gold is non-negotiable when it comes to interiors inspired by The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age. Ideally, it should feature in your core furniture, but at a minimum it needs to make an appearance in lighting, accessories and ornaments.

Craving curves and texture

Much of the magnificence of the homes featured in The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age comes from layering shapes, materials and fabrics.

Panelled walls bring brilliance to a space, making rooms look textured and taller. Then, add plush fabrics, like velvet seating, heavy drapes and silk headboards.

Feminine curves attract the eye (another reason you want your base to be neutral) and draw your guests’ gaze to period pieces, full of character.

For a clear nod to the age, marble is a must. Whether you opt for marble floors, statement sculptures or furnishings with marble features, don’t shy away from this stunning stone accent.

Lighting should be loud

Lighting has to make a statement if you want a room inspired by period dramas like the Buccaneers or The Gilded Age.

A huge chandelier is the ultimate grand gesture in a room. Even better, opt for one in a dramatic colour finish, so it appears to be dripping with jewels.

Partner your statement piece with deluxe table lamps and intricate wall sconces, with patterns begging to be explored.

Era-inspired furniture

To get the look right, consider antique pieces from the era or modern interpretations of classic designs.

Whilst it originated in the early 18th century, rococo style furniture saw a resurgence in the 19th century – and again, now – and clearly makes an appearance in both The Buccaneers and The Gilded Age.

The goal is ‘grand’ when it comes to furniture for period design. It should make a statement, whether by being substantial in size, eye-catching in design, or intricate in embellishments (or all three!).

Look for items with curves, carvings and extravagant detailing, like fringe accents, to ensure that ‘regencycore’ inspiration shines through.

Remember, you’re after maximalism here. Secondary furnishings, like ottomans and dressers, should ooze as much elegance as focal pieces like sofas and beds.

To finish the look, adorn your walls with impressive oil paintings and monumental mirrors
