A Sociable Living Room: How to Create a Space for Entertaining

Want socialising to be at the heart of your living room? Creating a warm and welcoming environment is key to any sociable living space. Guests don’t want to visit a showhome with no personality. Instead, keep things informal – design something fun, relaxing, and that ensures everyone is comfortable. Inspired by the recently resurging trend of the ‘conversation pit‘, we’ve created a guide to designing a living room that puts connection and comfort at its core. Read on to find out how to curate a sociable living room that encourages conversation, invites people to unwind, and delivers that all-important WOW factor.

Use seating to create a sociable space

Seating needs to be at the core of your plan when turning your living room into a social hub. To comfortably sit your guests, it’s not just about having enough chairs. You must ensure any seating you have suits the ‘sitter’, with the positioning considered to ensure everyone feels connected.

The sofa beckons

For the ultimate sociable living room, you need a sofa that is begging to be sat on. Nothing too stiff or formal – think deep seats and opulent, appealing fabrics.

Modular seating is ideal for entertaining, as its versatility in creating customised options and configurations, perfect for optimising or maximising space. The sectional nature of modular furniture means they’re easy to move around to make a space more convivial.

Corner sofas ooze homeliness and are a great way to attract guests into every corner of the conversation.  Corner sofas or curved sofas can be a modern take on a resurging trend of a ‘conversation pit‘! More on this trend, which is enjoying a stylish revival below.

Chairs aplenty

If you regularly entertain, you must have an abundance of seating options available to ensure no unlucky guests are stuck with a sad-looking cushion on the floor.

Accent chairs are a wonderful choice. They add personality and character to a room, even when there isn’t a bum on the seat! They can also be used to create a cosy reading corner, quiet morning coffee spot, or study zone when you’re not entertaining.

Consider who makes up your usual social crowd. If elderly relatives often visit, you may need options with more support. For example, something taller or more upright.

Dining chairs are ideal if you want to easily store or move chairs when it’s just you and the household.

For events with lots of children, large cushions, beanbags or bench seating works well for maximising space – and saving seats for the grown-ups!

If space for spare chairs is tight, choose furniture that can double up as seating, such as footstools, pouffes and ottomans.

Consider a conversation pit

If you’re designing your sociable space from scratch, consider a conversation pit (or ‘sunken living room’). This built-in seating option is designed with one thing in mind – socialising!

Popular in the 1960s, their appeal declined due to their potential to become a tripping hazard. Modern conversation pits, however, are growing in popularity – particularly for those who regularly entertain outdoors – as contemporary options offer much more versatility, for example, with ramps or stairs.

If you like the idea of sociable seating, but without the sunken element, replicate the feel with large curved sofas.

Sociable living spaces are cosy, comfortable and encourage conversation

Your living room’s design has to be considered to maximise talk-time over TV-time, and encourage those visiting to make themselves at home. Seating is important, but if your room feels cold, clinical or too formal, guests won’t be back for the next party. Ambience is key to creating a sociable living room.

Design for socialising

If the brief is socialising, the last thing you should do is seat everyone around an anti-social device, like a large TV.

Instead, position sofas facing each other to encourage eye contact and conversation. Chairs should be positioned close enough to ensure you and your guests aren’t shouting or struggling to hear.

A modern Majlis-style living room design is ideal for reducing the focus on tech and putting socialising at the room’s core.

Luxurious living room with high ceilings, an ornate chandelier, and gold accents. Two long, elegant couches sit opposite each other, surrounded by dark curtains. The room features a central coffee table with a floral arrangement and decorative items.

If the TV is tough to move, consider a temporary rejig of the room’s layout, or invest in a cabinet that allows you to hide the screen away.

A focal point can still be helpful to centre guests around. A log burner or fireplace is a welcoming choice – particularly when the weather starts to turn. Alternatively, consider a striking piece of art, a large window or a statement chandelier.

If it’s a large party, use rugs to zone areas of your living room. For example, if entertaining friends with their children, you could create a separate area for kids to play and adults to catch-up.

Make guests feel at home

The best hosts let their guests treat their house like a home.

Decorative throws and pillows are an easy way to warm up the room – both in temperature and atmosphere. Scatter cushions and drape throws across seating to make it clear guests are welcome to snuggle up with them.

If your home is feet-up friendly, let guests do the same (with shoes off, of course!). Set the tone with recliners, a luxury chaise longue or a pillowy footstool. Your guests will be curled up in no time.

Where’s my drink?

The key to any great social event is a steady supply of drinks and nibbles.

Don’t leave guests wondering where they left their beverage. You want plenty of table space surrounding your seating so guests aren’t juggling plates and glasses.

A large central coffee table can host the majority of snacks. Consider a square shape over a rectangle, so seating can easily surround it.

Extra side tables are a must. If you’d prefer not to have an abundance of side tables in the room when you’re not entertaining, opt for a nest of tables instead, which you can pull out as numbers increase.

Want to avoid constantly going back and forth to the kitchen to refill glasses? Then a cocktail cabinet or drinks trolley must feature in your social-first living room.

Complete your social space with luxury lighting

Turning on the overhead light (even if it is a stunning chandelier) is a big no when it comes to most social events. Instead, lighting should be soft and dim enough to feel warm, whilst remaining bright enough that guests can see each other – and the snacks!

Create this effect with layered lighting to set up your living space for any social occasion.

Use table lamps and standing lamps to draw attention to areas of interest – like the food or bar area – and guide guests around the room, ensuring furniture doesn’t become an obstacle.

For a soft glow, choose lamps that hide bulbs. Prefer a less busy aesthetic? Opt for wall lights and sconces, which provide a more diffused light without losing space to lamps.

Make your sociable living space unique to you

It’s important to inject your personality into the space. It is yours after all!

From adding personal touches like family photos and unique ornaments, to creating bespoke pieces of furniture, consider how you can let your preferences shine through in your design.

So there you have it – the key to creating a sociable living room lies in a few simple yet impactful choices: seating that invites guests to stay a while, lighting that sets the perfect mood, thoughtful touches that make everyone feel at home, and a layout that sparks conversation. Whether you’re inspired by the revival of the conversation pit or simply want to make your space more welcoming, it’s all about designing with people in mind.
